Diazepam 10 mg (Martin dows): Uses, Dosage & Safety Information
Description
Diazepam 10 mg is a prescription-only benzodiazepine used for short-term control of anxiety, severe agitation, muscle spasms, alcohol withdrawal, and certain seizure conditions. Manufactured by Martin Dow and sold under the brand name Valium, prolonged use is not advised due to the risk of dependence and reduced effectiveness.
How It Works
Diazepam enhances the effects of GABA, a neurotransmitter that reduces brain overactivity. This helps relieve anxiety, muscle spasms, and seizure activity, producing sedative, muscle-relaxant, and anticonvulsant effects on the central nervous system.
Dosage
Dosage is individualized based on the condition, age, and medical history. Adults typically take 2 mg to 10 mg, up to four times daily as prescribed. Changing the dose without medical supervision can be dangerous.
Special Considerations
Diazepam may cause drowsiness, slower reflexes, and impaired concentration. Avoid alcohol and other sedatives while using this medicine. Extra caution is needed for elderly patients and those with liver, kidney, or respiratory issues.
Pregnancy & Breastfeeding
Diazepam is generally avoided during pregnancy, especially in the first and third trimesters. It may harm the fetus, cause neonatal withdrawal, or breathing difficulties. Since it passes into breast milk, breastfeeding should be avoided unless medically approved.
Side Effects
Common side effects include sleepiness, dizziness, fatigue, and muscle weakness. Rare but serious effects may include confusion, memory problems, mood changes, or breathing difficulties. Long-term use may result in dependence and withdrawal symptoms.
Overdose Warning
Overdose may lead to extreme drowsiness, confusion, loss of consciousness, or coma. The risk is significantly higher if combined with alcohol, opioids, or other sedatives. Immediate emergency medical care is essential if an overdose is suspected.
Storage Instructions
Store at room temperature, away from light, heat, and moisture. Keep safely out of reach of children and pets. Do not use after the expiry date printed on the packaging.
