Nitrazepam (Noctin) 5 mg– Sleep Aid & Seizure Management
Description
Noctin 5 mg (Nitrazepam) is a benzodiazepine used to treat insomnia, restlessness, and certain seizure disorders. It is prescribed exclusively for short-term management under close medical supervision. The medicine is intended only for brief therapeutic use.
How It Works
Nitrazepam enhances GABA activity, a neurotransmitter that slows brain activity. This produces a calming effect that aids sleep and suppresses abnormal nerve activity. It helps initiate sleep and maintain improved sleep quality.
Dosage
Adults usually take 5–10 mg at bedtime, while elderly or frail patients start at 2.5–5 mg. Dosage and treatment length must be set by a doctor to reduce dependence risk. Short-term therapy is recommended to avoid tolerance and dependence.
Side Effects
Common side effects include drowsiness, dizziness, fatigue, and poor coordination. Prolonged or improper use may result in dependence, confusion, or memory problems. Higher doses and long-term use increase the risk of tolerance and dependence.
Pregnancy & Breastfeeding
Use during pregnancy is not advised, particularly in the first trimester. Nitrazepam passes into breast milk and may affect nursing infants. Late pregnancy use may trigger withdrawal symptoms in newborns.
Storage Instructions
Store in a cool, dry place below 25°C, away from direct light. Keep in the original packaging to prevent moisture damage and out of reach of children.
UK Regulation
Noctin (Nitrazepam) is a Prescription Only Medicine (POM) in the UK and is classified as a Class C controlled drug under the Misuse of Drugs Act. Legal supply requires a valid prescription from a licensed healthcare professional.
