Description
Diazepam 10mg is a prescription-only benzodiazepine used for short-term control of anxiety, severe agitation, muscle spasms, alcohol withdrawal, and certain seizure conditions. Manufactured by Martin Dow, it is sold under the brand name Valium. Prolonged use is not advised due to the risk of dependence and reduced benefit.
How It Works
Diazepam enhances the calming effects of GABA, a neurotransmitter that reduces brain overactivity. This action helps relieve anxiety, muscle tightness, and seizure activity. It produces sedative, muscle-relaxing, and anticonvulsant effects on the central nervous system.
Dosage
Dosage is tailored according to the treated condition, patient age, and medical history. Adults typically receive 2mg to 10mg, taken up to four times daily as prescribed. Changing dosage without medical supervision can be dangerous.
Special Considerations
This medicine can cause drowsiness, slowed reflexes, and impaired concentration. Alcohol and sedative medications should not be used concurrently. Elderly individuals and patients with liver, kidney, or breathing problems require additional caution.
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
Diazepam is generally avoided during pregnancy, especially during the first and third trimesters. It may cause harm to the fetus, withdrawal symptoms, or breathing issues in newborns. Because it passes into breast milk, breastfeeding is discouraged unless approved by a doctor.
Side Effects
Common side effects include sleepiness, dizziness, fatigue, and muscle weakness. Serious but uncommon effects may involve confusion, memory issues, mood changes, or breathing difficulties. Dependence and withdrawal can occur with long-term use.
Overdose Warning
An overdose may cause extreme drowsiness, confusion, loss of consciousness, or coma. The risk is greatly increased when combined with alcohol, opioids, or sedatives. Immediate emergency medical care is required if an overdose is suspected.
Storage
Store diazepam at room temperature, away from direct light, heat, and moisture. Keep it safely out of reach of children and pets. Do not use the medication after the stated expiry date.
UK Legal Disclaimer
